Aquatic ecosystems - lakes, ponds and streams - are hotspots of biodiversity in the cold and arid environment of Continental Antarctica. Environmental change is expected to increasingly alter Antarctic aquatic ecosystems and modify the physical characteristics and interactions within the habitats that they support. Here, we describe physical and biological features of the peripheral ‘moat’ of a closed-basin Antarctic lake. These moats mediate connectivity amongst streams, lake and soils. We highlight the cyclical moat transition from a frozen winter state to an active open-water summer system, through refreeze as winter returns. Summer melting begins at the lakebed, initially creating an ice-constrained lens of liquid water in November, which swiftly progresses upwards, creating open water in December. Conversely, freezing progresses slowly from the water surface downwards, with water at 1 m bottom depth remaining liquid until May. Moats support productive, diverse benthic communities that are taxonomically distinct from those under the adjacent permanent lake ice. We show how ion ratios suggest that summer exchange occurs amongst moats, streams, soils and sub-ice lake water, perhaps facilitated by within-moat density-driven convection. Moats occupy a small but dynamic area of lake habitat, are disproportionately affected by recent lake-level rises and may thus be particularly vulnerable to hydrological change.

Grain boundary migration and the exsolution of albite from alkali feldspar, followed by the precipitation of myrmekite from the same source on to adjacent plagioclase grains, will explain the reversed zoning of these phases in contrast to the normal zoning seen in igneous rocks.

Compositions of An61 and An69·5 have been determined for two domains in plagioclase from a gneiss. Optical properties indicate that the same compositions apply respectively for an intergrowth of ‘matrix’ and lamellae found in zones between the domains. The intergrowth appears to span the composition range between the Bøggild and Huttenlocher intergrowths.

Six alloys based on Cr-10Ta-7Si (by at.%) with quaternary additions of 0.5Ag, 5Ti, 1Hf, 3Mo, 3Al, or 3Re (by at.%) substituted for Cr were produced by vacuum arc-melting. The microstructures of the alloys were found to predominantly consist of a eutectic mixture of an A2 Cr-based solid solution and a C14 Cr2Ta Laves phase along with proeutectic Cr2Ta dendrites. Microstructural macro- and micro-scale inhomogeneities were observed in all alloy ingots, which were attributed to the non-equilibrium arc-melting process. The measured lattice parameters of the constituent phases and the elemental partitioning behaviour between the phases have been correlated with the respective covalent atomic radii. The bulk hardnesses of the alloys, along with the hardness of individual phases, have also been reported.

The phase equilibria and oxidation resistance of alloys lying near the Cr-rich end of the Cr- Ta-Si system have been investigated. Samples were prepared by arc-melting and homogenized at 1300°C for 500hrs. Identification of the phases present and their compositions were carried out using x-ray diffraction and electron probe micro-analysis and the ternary phase diagram on the Cr-rich end was plotted. A three-phase equilibria was found to exist between an A2 Cr-solid solution, a hexagonal Laves phase and the A15 Cr3Si intermetallic phase for alloys with higher contents of Si.Thermo-gravimetric analysis of the alloys at 1100°C demonstrated an improvement in the oxidation resistance of the ternary alloys with increasing Si-content. The microstructures of the oxidized samples revealed the formation of a thick chromia layer on top of a Cr,Ta-mixed oxide layer and an internal oxidation zone for all the alloys. A protective silica layer was not observed to form in any of the alloys tested.
